The Kerrville Folk Festival Foundation Presents...

University Student Songwriter’s Competition

Now Seeking Student Songwriters!

Texas is home to many exceptional and legendary songwriters who have made Texas music known around the world. This program was established to support and promote the continuation of songwriting among university students and to encourage songwriting as part of university curriculum for future generations. The campuses participating in this year’s program are Texas State University, Texas Tech University, and the University of Texas at Austin.

Winners from each university will perform at the 2018 Kerrville Folk Festival on Friday, May 25th from 3:30-5:30pm.

Entering the KFF University Songwriters Competition

♫ Between March 12, 2018 – April 6, 2018 (midnight CST) students from participating universities may submit two original songs (along with the appropriate contact info) via email to the Kerrville Folk Festival’s University Songwriter Competition.

♫ More information & guidelines about the Songwriter’s Competition can be found by clicking on the “University Songwriters” link located on the right side of the Kerrville Folk Festival Home Page.

♫ TO ENTER THE SONGWRITING CONTEST, students must submit an email:

  • « To:

  • « With the subject line: (first name) (last name) University Songwriters

  • « Include all contact information (first & last name, email address, phone number)

  • « Include WHICH UNIVERSITY the student is affiliated with

  • « Include the names of the 2 songs being submitted

  • « ATTACH two (2) original songs in an .mp3 format to the email

♫ Students can expect an email confirmation from the Kerrville Folk Festival (KFF) Office upon receipt of a complete email entry to the contest. If an entry is missing any information, an email from the KFF Office will describe the items needed to complete the entry.

Entry Guidelines

♫ Students who have co-written the submitted songs should both be listed in the email and will compete as a duo. Songs may be co-written with a non-student, as long as the co-writer is not a published songwriter.

♫ Submissions do not have to be new recordings. Previously recorded cuts may be
submitted. There are no limitations on the size of the band backing the singer on the submission, but there is a limit of ONE accompanist on stage at the university campus Finalist performance.

Guidelines for Review

♫ Reviewers and Listener-judges should separate the quality of the song from the quality of the performance recorded. A very well written song performed and recorded crudely is more valued than a fair song with a great sound.

  • ♫  Kerrville Folk Festival will provide further structure for assessment.

  • ♫  Songwriters will ultimately be evaluated on both songs submitted.
